Unraced as a 2-year-old, he made his debut in January at Santa Anita, breaking his maiden in his second start. He was 5th in the El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows then won an allowance at Santa Anita before shipping to Keeneland and rallying from far back to win the Lexington Stakes for his final prep. Skipped the Derby to go to the Preakness instead, but was scratched the day before due to a bruised foot.
