He broke his maiden in his second start, at Keeneland on October 23, then did not start again until March 11, finishing a close second in a Gulfstream allowance on the turf. He made his stakes debut in the March 26 Vinery Spiral (G3) which he won by 2 3/4 lengths. In the Kentucky Derby (G1) with new jockey John Velazquez, he sat 6 lengths off the pace midpack early, came out for room and closed with a rush to win the Roses by 2 3/4 lengths. Was 13th early but rallied late to just miss in the Preakness, finishing 2nd to Shackleford by a half length.
