A field of ten 3-year-old fillies competed in the 134th edition of the $500,000 Kentucky Oaks (G1), traditionally held on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby. With heavy rains all afternoon, the track was sloppy and sealed, with temperatures in the low 70's. A crowd of 100,046 came out to Churchill Downs braving the rainy, windy conditions. Fair Grounds Oaks winner Proud Spell was sent off as the lukewarm 3-1 favorite despite finishing third in the Ashland in her final prep. Country Star, who was fifth in the Ashland, was the 7-2 second choice over 4-1 Pure Clan, third in the Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park last time out.
Bsharpsonata sprinted clear and angled down to the rail to save ground on the clubhouse turn, setting a pace of 23.73, 48.86, and 1:12.95 while Proud Spell and Little Belle stalked her down the backstretch. Country Star raced in fourth while Pure Clan was reserved back in 8th. Bsharpsonata stubbornly held the lead into the stretch, but as she tired at the 3/16 pole Proud Spell easily moved up to take the lead. Through the final furlong Proud Spell drew away to win the Oaks by 5 lengths over Little Belle in 1:50.01 over the sloppy track. It was just 3/4 length more to late-running Pure Clan in third.
