The $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes (G2) featured a field of ten 3-year-olds sprinting 7 furlongs. Swale (G3) and Bay Shore (G3) winner Trinniberg was sent off as the 5-2 favorite off his 17th place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). In to challenge him included 7-2 second choice Bourbon Courage, 4th in the Derby Trial (G3) last out, and 9-2 third choice Hierro, winner of the Derby Trial.

As expected Trinniberg went to the lead immediately and set fractions of 22.30 and 44.73 while pressed by 9-1 Currency Swap. Turning for home, Trinniberg opened up a 2 length lead on Currency Swap through 3/4 in 1:08.78, and easily held the lead to the finish, winning by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:22.26. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to 15-1 Il Vilano third.
