Fillies in the Preakness Stakes

Excellent Meeting

So far 53 fillies have started in the second jewel of the Triple Crown in the 134 runnings of the Preakness Stakes. This year Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra was supplemented to the Preakness and become the 53rd filly to compete, and the fifth to win. She is also the first Kentucky Oaks winner to run in the Preakness.

Until Rachel Alexandra in 2009, it had been ten years since a filly has run in the Preakness, when Excellent Meeting pulled up and did not finish in 1999. The last filly to complete the race was Kentucky Derby winning filly Winning Colors who finished 3rd in the Preakness.

Only five fillies have won the Preakness Stakes: Rachel Alexandra (2009), Nellie Morse (1924), Rhine Maiden (1915), Whimsical (1906), and Flocarline (1903). Of the 53 fillies to start in the Preakness, there have been 5 wins, 5 seconds, and 8 thirds. In 1915 both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness were won by a filly, but it was two different fillies. Regret, who won the Derby, did not run in the Preakness which was won by Rhine Maiden. This is the only time two legs of the Triple Crown have been won by a filly in the same year, but this may change should Rachel Alexandra come back to win the Belmont.

Listed below is every filly that ran in the Preakness, her odds to win (* indicates betting favorite), and her finishing position. Some of the older charts prior to 1910 did not list odds for all the horses, so they are omitted where not available.
