Melbourne Cup Results

Glen Boss celebrates his Melbourne Cup win on Makybe Diva.

Dateline: 11/03/03

As per tradition, on the first Tuesday in November the Group 1 Melbourne Cup was contested at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. Like the Kentucky Derby in America, the Melbourne Cup is "the race that stops a nation", with 122,736 fans in attendance at Flemington and millions elsewhere watching on television or listening on the radio.

A field of 23 (with the morning line favorite Mummify scratching the morning of the race due to a fever) faced the starter and a 3200 meter (about 2 mile) journey for the winner's share of the $4.6 million (Australian) purse.

The field was well strung out most of the way down the backstretch, but turning for home they bunched up and a cavalry charge ensued. Jockey Glen Boss threaded the proverbial needle, when his mount Makybe Diva shot out of the pack, splitting horses with 3/16 mile to go, then holding on to win by 1 1/4 lengths over She's Archie, in a final time of 3:19.90 for the 3200 meters. It was another 3 lengths back to Jardine's Lookout in third. 11-2 favorite Mamool, owned by Godolphin Racing and ridden by Frankie Dettori, finished last, beaten 35 lengths.

Winning jockey Glen Boss said, "I've won a lot of big races and the feeling's always great, but I am lost for words this time. She got there so easy, she had a soft run. She gave me a great ride, I stayed towards the fence, it was like I was in the zone. Everywhere I went it was happening for me. It was just like it was meant to be."

Winning owner Tony Santic bet a whopping $700,000 to win on his horse. After the win he said, "I've been dreaming about it for years, but to get there let alone win it is just mind-boggling."
