46-1 outsider Spanish Chestnut had the lead coming out of the chute, and he was a length ahead of Pomeroy after an initial quarter in 22.74. Pomeroy took over the lead halfway down the backstretch, getting the half in 45.65 as Spanish Chestnut tired badly. War Front closed from fourth around the far turn and made a bid for the lead through the stretch, but Pomeroy had enough left to pull ahead to win by 2 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:23.39 over the fast surface. It was just a neck back to 37-1 Friendly Island who closed from well back. Commentator suffered from a poor start and had nothing left for the end, finishing tenth.
