Rain washes out part of the card

Workers try to repair the washed-out inner track

The first two races were conducted as scheduled over the temporary inner-dirt track, but a sudden downpour soon washed out the surface. The remaining dirt races were cancelled when jockeys voted not to ride. Chris Evans, Woodbine's vice president of Thoroughbred racing, said, "The idea was to amend the harness track to a thoroughbred track. However, when you put a thoroughbred cushion on a hard harness track, you run the risk of losing that track. In heavy rain, the water washes the sand right off. Getting ready for the third race, the jockeys that came from the second weren't feeling the track was safe any longer. Our trackman offered to add material to the track. The jockeys just weren't comfortable with that and said repairs in the past sometimes haven't met their expectations." Evans noted that Polytrack installation is ahead of schedule with the first races over the new track expected to go on August 23.
