Belmont Park hosted two Grade 2 stakes events on their special Independence Day card. 8,415 came out on an overcast day on Long Island, and were first treated to the $200,000 Tom Fool Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2) for older sprinters at 7 furlongs on the main track. Commentator was the 1-2 favorite coming off his win in the Richmond Runner, with Godolphin runner Rondo the 5-1 second choice and High Finance the 6-1 third choice. Each of them was exiting a victory in optional claiming company.

Commentator and High Finance contested the pace down the backstretch with Rondo stalking them in third through fractions of 22.07 and 43.99. Rondo briefly tasted the lead after half a mile but eventually faded to fourth. High Finance, who had saved ground on the turn, was able to kick clear through the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths over late-closing 11-1 Awesome Twist in 1:21.81. Commentator was 1/2 a length back in third.
