This is the first year Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, David C. Onley has attended the Queen's Plate as the Her Majesty's Royal Representative. Before being appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper as the vice-regal in September 2007, he was a news reporter on Toronto local TV stations CITY-TV and CP24. He battled polio at the age of 3 which resulted in full paralysis but through extensive therapy he regained use of his hands, allowing him to operate a scooter for mobility.

Woodbine constructed a temporary ramp to allow him to get up to the Royal Box from the track apron while on his scooter, and last year, installed a permanent wheelchair ramp to the stage in the infield winner's circle.
