Celebrating its 75th renewal this year, the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1) is the major West Coast prep for the Kentucky Derby, a 1 1/8 mile test around two turns of Santa Anita Park's main track. 33,166 fans came out to the historic oval near the San Gabriel Mountains, enjoying sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 80's. San Felipe (G2) winner Creative Cause was the 9-10 favorite in the field of 9 three-year-olds, with 4-1 second choice I'll Have Another, winner of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) last out, and 6-1 third choice Liaison off his fourth place finish in the San Felipe.
Jockey Joe Talamo sent 42-1 longshot Blueskiesnrainbows to an uncontested lead of 2 1/2 lengths through fractions of 23.11, 47.11, and 1:11.14 over the fast track, with I'll Have Another and 24-1 Longview Drive stalking the pace second and third. Blueskiesnrainbows continued to lead to mid-stretch, getting the mile in 1:35.36, but I'll Have Another and Creative Cause came out to rally past the pacesetter. I'll Have Anotherr outfinished the favorite to win by a nose in 1:47.88. It was just 1/2 a length back to Blueskiesnrainbows third.
