Outside of Breeders' Cup week, the highlight race of the Santa Anita fall meeting is the $250,000 Awesome Again Stakes (G1), formerly known as the Goodwood, featuring the best older horses of the west coast going 1 1/8 miles on the main track, and is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Classic. 17,565 fans came to the Arcadia oval on Saturday afternoon under sunny skies and temperatures in the 90's. As expected, Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) winner Game On Dude was sent off as the 3-10 favorite in the field of 9 off his close second in the Pacific Classic (G1) last out. In to challenge him included 6-1 second choice Richard's Kid, third in the Pacific Classic after winning the Cougar II (G3), and 10-1 third choice Nonios off his fifth place finish in the Travers (G1).
Jockey Javier Matias sent 47-1 Winning Machine to the lead first time past the stands and he set fractions of 23.23, 48.02, and 1:11.94 over the fast track while stalked by Game on Dude and 11-1 Rail Trip. Entering the stretch Winning Machine tired as Game On Dude easily took over the lead, opening up a 2 1/2 length lead in midstretch through 1 mile in 1:36.33. Nonios, fourth early, put in a futile rally to get second as Game On Dude cruised past the post 3 1/4 lengths in front in 1:48.98. It was a long 4 1/2 lengths back to late-running Richard's Kid third.
