Saturday's feature race at Belmont Park was the $250,000 Garden City Stakes (G2) for 3-year-old fillies going 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf course. A field of seven went to post on a sunny afternoon with the temperature in the low 70s. Check the Label sent off as the even money favorite off three straight victories in the Appalachian (G3), Sands Point (G2), and Virginia Oaks (G3). In to challenge her included 5-2 second choice Queen of the Creek, winner of the Riskaverse Stakes last out, and 5-1 third choice Negligee, third in the Sands Point (G2) but winless since the Alcibiades (G1) last year at Keeneland.
Queen of the Creek went to the front immediately and opened up a 2 1/2 length lead on the clubhouse turn, getting fractions of 23.39, 47.80, and 1:13.11 over the firm going with Negligee stalking her in second. Favorite Check the Label sat in last as many as 13 lengths out. Gitchee Goomee, who was 5th down the backstretch, moved up to pass the tiring pacesetter at the 3/16 pole to gain a short lead after a mile in 1:38.74. Check the Label and jockey Ramon Dominguez came through on the inside on the turn then came out 3 wide late to get up for the 3/4 length victory over Snow Top Mountain in 1:51.41. It was a length back to Gitchee Goomie third.
