Wonder Lady Anne L, carrying the lightest weight of the five entered in Saturday's 84th running of the $200,000 Demoiselle (G2) closed late to defeatCinderella's Dream by 2 3/4 lengths in the 1 1/8 mile, two-turn event for 2-year-old fillies.
Trained by Richard Dutrow Jr., who is a serious contender to win the Eclipse Award as the nation's top trainer this year, Wonder Lady Anne L sat comfortably back of front-running Wait a While, who set an uncontested pace of 24.44 and 49.91. Entering the far turn, both Cinderella's Dream and Wonder Lady Anne L made moves on the leader and at the quarter-pole they were three across the front. Wonder Lady L, carrying 115 while the others carried 119, took on Cinderella's Dream as the leader faded, then kicked clear under jockey Cornelio Velasquez for the victory in 1:52.85. It was the second win in seven starts for the daughter of 1998 Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner Real Quiet. The longest price on the board, Wonder Lady Anne L paid $23 to win. She is owned by Sanford H. Robbins and LLC IEAH Stables.

"I told Cornelio (Velasquez) that I didn't want her to go out after the lead. We wanted her to relax in the first part," Dutrow said. "He got her to settle nicely, and he worked out a great trip. I don't know what we'll do with her next. When we bought her, I really liked the number that she ran down in Florida. Just by looking at her, it looked like she wanted to go long."
Trainer Todd Pletcher, who keeps adding to the North American single-season earnings record he set on Friday and who is a leading challenger to Dutrow for the Eclipse Award, ran second, third and fourth with Cinderella's Dream, Wait a While and Love Locket, respectively. Favored Better Now was last.
