Bella Medaglia wins the 2012 Treasure Chest Stakes

The $150,000 Treasure Chest Stakes featured a field of 8 older fillies and mares (7 betting interests) going 1 mile at Delta Downs. The two horse entry of last year's winner Bella Medaglia and Little Ms Protocol was sent off as the 2-1 favorite over 5-2 She's Prado's Idol and 4-1 Silent Moon. Jockey Federico Mata sent 9-2 Chernomorochka to the front and she set fractions of 23.17, 47.12, and 1:12.00 while stalked by Bella Medaglia. Chernomorochka tired in the final 3/16 as Bella Medaglia cruised to a 1 3/4 length win over her stablemate in 1:38.52. It was another 2 lengths from Little Ms Protocol back to She's Prado's Idol third.

There were two $150,000 stakes races restricted to Louisiana-bred juveniles, each contested at 1 mile. In the Louisiana Legacy for colts and geldings, 6-5 favorite Palmy Bay set the early pace of 22.50 and 46.54 before tiring. 5-2 second choice Westernator, 8th early in the field of 9, closed late to win by 3/4 length over 4-1 Heitai in 1:41.16. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to 50-1 longest shot Unbridled's Score third.

The filly counterpart is the Louisiana Jewel Stakes, closing out the stakes action on Saturday. 9-5 favorite Snappy Girl led through fractions of 23.06, 48.12, and 1:13.62. In the stretch, 6-1 Hometown Gossip closed from 5th to win by 3 1/4 lengths over 3-1 She Loves Runnin' in 1:41.06. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back to Snappy Girl third.
