On Thursday at a special noon-hour event, final entries were taken and post positions were drawn for the 55th renewal of the Oaks. Retired boxer "Irish" Micky Ward, the inspiration for 2010 movie "The Fighter," starring Mark Wahlberg, was the honorary drawmaster, on hand to randomly draw the entry forms out of the box while racing secretary Steve Lym drew the numbers in the traditional "double blind" format. Before the draw, Ward was interviewed by track announcer Dan Loiselle on stage about his experiences in and out of the ring. He talked about the aftermath of one of his three fights with Canadian-born Arturo Gatti, where the two were injured enough to need medical attention and ended up in the same hospital in the same room together. Two of their three bouts were named "fight of the year" by Ring Magazine. Ward and his half-brother Dick Eklund spent time in Los Angeles to train Wahlberg and co-star Christian Bale for their roles. Currently, Ward runs a boxing gym in his hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts.
A field of 9 three-year-old fillies made final entry for the 55th renewal of the Oaks, with Inglorious the 5-2 morning line favorite out of post 3 off her win in the La Lorgnette Stakes on May 15. Luis Contreras gets the call on Sunday for trainer Josie Carroll, who said of the Oaks and also Queen's Plate favorite, "I'm not going to say anything about the Plate until after we run in the Oaks. Right now the goal is the Oaks and we'll see how she bounces out of it." Inglorious worked 5/8 in 59 4/5 seconds on May 25 in her final workout before the Oaks.
Roxy Gap is the 3-1 second choice and drew the 7 post, off a win in the Fury Stakes on April 30. Patrick Husbands will be in the irons for trainer Mark Casse. Casse said Roxy Gap resembles his 2007 champion Sealy Hill, but points out "They're similar in their physiques, but Sealy Hill didn't get to be a really good-looking filly until she was 4. Sealy Hill wouldn't gallop out after the wire, she'd stop. Roxy Gap does the same thing and she's a lot sweeter too. Her breeze on May 23 in 1:01 1/5 was impressive. She went 7/8 in 1:28. Patrick told me she can go 1 1/4 miles. I'm excited." Reade Baker trains 4-1 third choice Bear It's Time out of post 5, winner of the Lady Angela last out. New jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson will be aboard on Sunday. Baker said that her 84 Beyer in the Lady Angela "doesn't hold much water with me simply because we've got a sprint Beyer and they've got a route Beyer. It's a tough task (to win the Oaks) but she's doing everything positive . We'll see if she's up to it, but I can't wait a month or two for the next $500,000 race."
