Greener Pastures is a 160-acre farm that was donated by the late Mrs. Doris S. Wear for the purpose of providing a home for abandoned animals, as well as a sanctuary for the resident population of Blue Herons and American Eagles. The farm is also a setting where young and old alike will have the opportunity to learn more about the care of horses.
ReRun, Inc., a Kentucky-based non-profit Thoroughbred rescue group, manages the farm and the educational programs being developed at the Greener Pastures facility.
The guest of honor at the ReRun Open House will be "Rich In Dallas," a 9-year-old Thoroughbred gelding who was recently claimed from the track by three horse retirement groups, ReRun, The Exceller Fund and Old Friends, with the help of an anonymous California donor. Rich In Dallas, the newest resident of Greener Pastures, was one of seven horses who played Seabiscuit in the Oscar-nominated movie. He will be available for viewing and photo opportunities with the public. The Open House festivities will also include music, hay and pony rides, a face-painting booth, and a barbeque concession.
A large collection of ReRun's famous "Moneighs" will be on display as well. These "Master Works of Equine Expression," are original works actually done by the horses in tempura paint, using their noses, hooves and tails. Famous racehorses and stallions from around the country have created these unique and fascinating works of art, and the current showing will include the unique art of Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, along with his companion pony Butterscotch.
