Breeders' Cup World Championships

All about the Breeders' Cup World Championships, the biggest event of the year in Thoroughbred horse racing. Held at a different track each year in late October or early November, this is where all the best horses in the world come and annual championships are decided. In 2013 the Breeders' Cup will be held on November 1 and 2 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. It will be back there again in 2014 as well on October 31 and November 1.

The last two times the main track races was a synthetic surface, but this time it was back to regular dirt. There were 9 races on Saturday and 6 on Friday with post times set later so they are more in line with east coast time.

In 2011, the Breeders' Cup World Championships were held on November 4 and 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This was the eighth time Churchill Downs has hosted the event and the second year some of the races were run under lights with the Filly and Mare Turf, Ladies Classic, and Classic all run after sunset.

In 2010, the Breeders' Cup World Championships were held on November 5 and 6 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and it was the first year some of the races were run at night under the lights. Goldikova became the first and only horse to win three Breeders' Cup races, taking her third consecutive Mile. This also gave her trainer Freddy Head his fifth Breeders' Cup win, with two as the jockey of Miesque in 1987 and 1988 in addition to three training Goldikova. The great mare Zenyatta tried to repeat her win in the Classic only to finish second to Blame.

In 2009, the Breeders' Cup World Championships were held on November 6 and 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia California. This was the fifth time Santa Anita hosted the event and the second time the main track races will be run on a synthetic surface. It was also the first year to allow for two also-eligibles who can draw in if there is a scratch and to use standard post position color-coded saddle cloths instead of all purple as in the past.

In 2008, the Breeders' Cup World Championships were held on October 24 and 25 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia California. This was the fourth time Santa Anita has hosted the event and the first time the Breeders' Cup main track races were run over a synthetic surface. European horses did quite well in the turf races as expected, but also on the main track as many train over synthetic surfaces, including a 1-2 finish in the $5 million Classic with Raven's Pass and Henrythenavigator.
