By Cindy Pierson Dulay, About.com Guide to Horse Racing
All about the Breeders' Cup World Championships, the biggest event of the year in Thoroughbred horse racing. Held at a different track each year in late October or early November, this is where all the best horses in the world come and annual championships are decided. In 2008 the Breeders' Cup was held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. It is back at Santa Anita in 2009 and will move to Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY, in 2010.

2009 Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita Park

In 2009, the Breeders' Cup World Championships will be held on November 6 and 7 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia California. This will be the fifth time Santa Anita has hosted the event and the second time the main track races will be run on a synthetic surface. This year each race will also allow for two also-eligibles who can draw in if there is a scratch and will use standard post position color-coded saddle cloths instead of all purple as in the past.

This was the fourth time Santa Anita has hosted the event and the first time the Breeders' Cup main track races were run over a synthetic surface. European horses did quite well in the turf races as expected, but also on the main track as many train over synthetic surfaces, including a 1-2 finish in the $5 million Classic with Raven's Pass and Henrythenavigator.
