Donativum wins the 2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf over Westphalia at Santa Anita

A full field of twelve 2-year-olds went to post in the $1 million Grey Goose Juvenile Turf, a 1 mile trip around two turns of the turf course. Westphalia, winner of the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, was sent off as the 3-1 favorite over Bourbon Stakes winner Bittel Road at 4-1 and Summer Stakes winner Grand Adventure at 9-2.

Orthodox was loose on the lead by as many as 3 lengths through fractions of 22.54, 46.53 and 1:10.34 before fading from contention. Coronet of a Baron, 3rd early, came out three-wide into the lane took over the lead in mid-stretch, but 6-1 Donativum, 9th early, came through just off the rail on the inside and closed well to prevail by 1/2 a length over late-running Westphalia in 1:34.68 over the firm turf course. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Coronet of a Baron third.
