Better Talk Now wins the 2004 Breeders' Cup Turf

The $2 million John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) saw just eight run, including the shortest price on the toteboard all afternoon, Kentucky-based 0.70-1 Kitten's Joy. Powerscourt represented Europe as the 2.90-1 second choice, from the powerful Coolmore operation in Ireland. Magistretti shipped in from New York as the 6.10-1 third choice.

8.10-1 shot Star Over the Bay set a brisk early pace of 1:13.96 for 3/4 over the yielding curse but was used up shortly after. Powerscourt, unhurried early on after breaking poorly, inherited the lead going into the last straight and got 1 1/4 miles in 2:04.15. He held the lead to the 1/8 pole but the longest shot on the board, 27.90-1 Better Talk Now, rapidly closed the gap on the turn, charged to the front while drifting slightly inward, then drew away to win by 1 3/4 length in 2:29.70. Kitten's Joy launched a rally in the 2 path on the turn, made a run on the inside to threaten but was no match for the winner, outfinishing the European in the final strides to get place money by a head margin. It was 2 3/4 length back to Magistretti in fourth.

Winning trainer H. Graham Motion said, "This is so wonderful. It makes it even more special when you have a longshot and get a win. I didn't tell Ramon (Dominguez) anything special. He knows this horse very well. He is a star in his own right now."

Winning jockey Ramon Dominguez said, "That was kind of the move he made in the Sword Dancer. I didn't know how it was going to develop but when I got to the 5/8 pole I felt so good. I said if he is going to win today is going to be the day."

Dale Romans, trainer of beaten favorite and second place finisher Kitten's Joy said, "The whole time around he struggled. He tried the whole way. He showed the heart of a champion. He definitely is the Turf Champion (Eclipse award). I don't see how anyone could vote any other way." Jockey John Velazquez added, "He was having trouble with the ground. I slapped him a couple of times and he never quickened the way he usually does."

Aidan O'Brien, trainer of third place finisher Powerscourt said, "He ran a good race. I think it was a messy race, the way it unfolded. Jamie (Spencer) made his move on the back straight, and just said he got a little bit tired."
