A Humorous Look at the World of Horse Racing

LuckySports

The Bottom Line

Former bookie Charles S. Hellman and sports cartoonist Robert A. Tiritilli team up to produce this absolutely hilarious collection of horse racing cartoons. All fans of racing will "get" the humor in it and will enjoy reading through it many times over. Highly recommended. Makes for a perfect gift for all occasions.

Pros

  • Some of the funniest horse racing cartoons we have ever seen
  • Nobody is safe - jockeys, trainers, horses, and bettors are all spoofed
  • Great for a quick laugh on the coffee table or in the bathroom

Cons

  • Even though there are 117 cartoons you still wished there were more

Description

  • Tiritilli has been an equine artist, cartoonist, and racing fan for over 50 years.
  • Through his years of experience he knows many of the characters that inhabit the racetrack.
  • He does an excellent job capturing their essence, allowing the sport of racing to laugh at itself.
  • He is talented at striking the right balance between realism and caricature, depending on the topic.
  • For fans of other sports, he also did baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer, football, and golf.

Guide Review - Review - Horse Racing: A Humorous Look at the World of Horse Racing

In this work, cartoonist and long-time racing fan Robert Tiritilli drew 117 very high quality racing related sketches, poking fun at the unique characters in the sport, such as the jockeys, trainers, owners, and bettors, but also takes common racing terms like bounce pattern, longshot, and ringer, skewing them in his drawings to make it into a joke. Then, once the drawing is complete, ex-bookie Charles Hellman takes over, coming up with just the right caption to go under the cartoon to complete the package. Some of the jokes are "classics" while others are new for this book. In the field of racing cartoons, there will always be comparisons to long-time cartoonist Pierre Bellocq of the Daily Racing Form. Tiritilli and Hellman definitely distinguish themselves from the venerable "Peb", tackling the sport from an entirely different angle. Despite this, fans of "Peb" will definitely enjoy this work as well.
