Labor Day this year will mark the second annual one day celebration of racing called America's Day at the Races. It will showcase racing at tracks across the country and will include lots of special events in an effort to bring in new fans to the sport. There will also be a special Coast-to-Coast Triple, a pick 3 style wager, on the Del Mar Derby at Del Mar, the Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park, and the Miller Genuine Draft Cradle Stakes at River Downs. Other big events for Labor Day will include the $2 million All-American Futurity for the 2 year old Quarter Horses at Ruidoso Downs and a guaranteed $2.5 million pick six at Del Mar, both of which will be simulcast to most locations.
This the perfect day to bring your friends and family to the races and introduce them to our great sport. Take time to explain how things work and about the different people involved in getting a horse to the races. Show them the horses in the paddock and explain how to make a wager. Make it an enjoyable experience instead of the confusing one it is for many new patrons at the track.
On America's Day, host tracks will have all kinds of freebies and activities planned. Events planned are Kid's Derby, pony rides, jockey T-shirt toss, jockey for a day, name the yearling contest, adopt an expert, clean the stall contest, celebrity autograph sessions, and owner for a day. Many track will be giving away caps, posters, cash, T-shirts, photos, free or reduced price admission, and other prizes. You can check to see what your local track is doing here about halfway down the page.
