The Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, annually one of the top American Quarter Horse sales, is set for Friday, August 30 through Sunday, September 1. The sale will begin at 5 p.m. Mountain (or after all the races have been run for the day) each evening and will be held at Ruidoso Downs Sale Pavilion in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
A total of 532 yearlings from the industry's most influential sires are consigned to this year's sale. First Down Dash, the sport's all-time leading sire, has 21 yearlings in the sale. From 12 crops, First Down Dash by two-time world champion Dash For Cash has sired 25 champions, 150 stakes winners and the earners of more than $41.4 million. Bred by A.F. Stanley Jr. and B.F. Phillips Jr., First Down Dash raced exclusively in California from 1986-87, winning 13 of 15 races and earning $857,256. He won eight stakes and was named world champion in 1987. Owned by a syndicate, he stands at Vessels Stallion Farm at Bonsall, California.
Chicks Beduino, the second place all-time leading sire in American Quarter Horse racing, will have 38 yearlings making an appearance in the sale arena. Racing exclusively in California from 1986-87, Chicks Beduino won the Bay Meadows (G1) and Governor's Cup (RG3) futurities and earned $412,999. From 12 crops, the 18-year-old stallion by Beduino (TB) has sired 97 stakes winners, six champions and the earners of more than $20.2 million. Bred by Californians Joe Muniz and John Bobenreith, Chicks Beduino stands at Blane Schvaneveldt Ranch in Romoland, California Royal Quick Dash, sire of this year's fastest All American Futurity qualifier, AB What A Runner, will have 22 yearlings in the sale. Other yearlings featuring noteworthy lineage are Corona Cartel and Mr Jess Perry. An online catalog is available at www.horseauctions.com.

RACE RECORD:
- Three wins in four starts, earnings of $52,285.
- Won All American trial heat 6 by 1 3/4 lengths.
- Recorded the eighth-fastest qualifying time of :21.323 and a lifetime-best 101 speed index.
- Won the July 21, $95,665 Rainbow Juvenile Invitational (RG3) for her first stakes victory.
CONNECTIONS:
- Owner Terry K. Wood bred and raised Andthebeatgoeson at home. "A good friend of mine (Billy Garrison) had the mother, and I bought her from him," says Wood, who sells new and used cars and owns a farm in Decatur, Texas. "Jimmy Coffman and I have about 20 mares out there, and Jimmy runs it for me," His father, Benny, raced Quarter Horses many years ago.
- Trainer C. Dwayne "Sleepy" Gilbreath, who began training racehorses in the 1960s at nonpari-mutuel tracks across Texas, has won the All American Futurity twice -- with On A High in 1983 and Refrigerator in 1990. He also qualified The Down Side to this year's race. All told, Gilbreath has qualified a total of 25 horses to the All American. Since 1970, he has saddled the winners of 1,010 races and the earners of more than $16 million, including champions Significant Speed and Ed Grimley.
- Jockey Roy Baldillez belongs to a family of successful horsemen that includes his brothers, Alex and Orlando, both of whom are jockeys. Alex won the 1981 All American (G1) on Elans Special. Roy began his career in 1985 and has ridden 948 winners and the earners of more than $6.6 million. The richest victory of Baldillez's career came aboard Red Clay Of Texas in the 2001 Ruidoso Futurity (G1). He has ridden in four previous All Americans, most recently last year with Phenomenal Fantasy.
- Gilbert Ortiz is expetcted to ride Andthebeatgoeson in the final and Baldillez will be aboard The Down Side. Ortiz finished second on Fashionisanattitude in the 2000 All American Futurity. His mounts have won nearly 1,600 races and more than $10 million.
PEDIGREE NOTES:
- A finalist in champion Royal Quick Dash's 1991 All American Futurity (G1), sire Leaving Memories has from seven crops sired 30 stakes winners and the earners of more than $4.1 million. Bred by the late Bob Moore, the 13-year-old First Down Dash stallion won three of 13 races, ran third in the 1992 QHBC Sophomore Classic (G2) and HQHRA Inaugural Handicap (G3), and earned $112,121. Leaving Memories is owned by James E. Helzer of Arlington, Texas, and stands at Helzer's JEH Stallion Station at Pilot Point, Texas.
- Dam Cautious Winner raced in 1992 and won three of five races -- including the Cowgirl Futurity at Trinity Meadows -- and earned $21,470. Bred by R.E. Wise of Madisonville, Texas, the 12-year-old mare has four winners from six starters, including Andthebeatgoeson's full brother, 1997 Rainbow Futurity (G1) winner and All American Futurity finalist Cautious Memories, and Dasher Winner, a stakes-winning gelding by the Dash For Cash stallion Some Dasher.
