The next track to visit was plannned to be Catterick on July 4th. After determining the train itinerary, tickets were purchased & train boarded. Settling into a seat and opening the Racing Post, that sinking feeling started to creep in when Catterick's card for the event couldn't be found. Inquiry of a gentlemen also leafing through a racing paper solved the mystery: Catterick was indeed closed due to foot and mouth disease, and the course's races were being run at Southwell! So, the only way to salvage the misguided trip to Darlington was sightseeing on Independence Day.

To salvage the schedule, Haydock Park became the destination for Thurday. The round trip to the racecourse was an adventure in itself. The train itinery chosen was Hull to Manchester to Liverpool to St. Albans, followed by a 30-minute bus ride to the track. On return, the 1½-hour wait for the bus made train connections difficult for so late in the day, that York was the closest train station. Four trains, five busses, and a taxi made for a long day of travel.
