About.com Poll
Is Hallowed Dreams worthy of holding the all-time consecutive win record?

Yes, she does what a racehorse is supposed to do -- WIN!
No, doing it in cheap company makes her record meaningless.
I'm not sure yet.

Update: Monday May 28, 2001, Hallowed Dreams travelled outside her native Louisiana for the first time to Lone Star Park in Texas for the $100,000 Valid Expectations Stakes at 6 furlongs for fillies and mares. As expected, she went straight to the front and won by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:08.34, just missing the track record. She has extended her new win streak to six in a row now. You can view her full race record here.

August 12, 2000, Hallowed Dreams tried for consecutive win No. 17 in the $36,500 Millennium Stakes at Evangeline Downs but it was not to be. She was the odds-on favorite at 1-9 going 6 furlong against only 4 rivals. You could tell she was not quite right from the beginning as she didn't make her customary early lead while Sparkles of Luck grabbed the lead shortly after the start and never looked back. The pair went head and head for over half the race and for a minute at the head of the stretch Hallowed Dreams looked like she might take off and win but took an apparent bad step and was unable to regain her momentum. Sparkles of of Luck took off and won by 2 lengths while Ides Beware rallied up for second with Hallowed Dreams another 2 1/4 lengths back in third.

Because there was no show wagering on the race, people pounded Hallowed Dreams to place so consequently the place pay offs-were huge:

  Horse Win Place
2 SPARKLES OF LUCK 21.00 76.60
1 IDES BEWARE 115.20

On Saturday July 15th the modern day record for consecutive wins set by Citation and tied by Cigar and Mister Frisky was tied again by a relatively unknown filly named Hallowed Dreams who has yet to race outside her home state of Louisiana. The small-time filly with small-time connections stands a very good chance of setting a big-time record in her next race. She has taken on all comers including the boys and older fillies and just keeps on winning. Sure, she hasn't really run against any "classy" horses but still winning 15 in a row against any company is still a big achievement.

Hallowed Dreams didn't seem like such a bargain when they first took her to the track. She was so nervous she couldn't sleep and would barely eat. To calm her down they put a big paint gelding named Buck in with her and that soon straightened her out. Buck still stays close and takes her to all her races. Under his calming influence she turned in to the big fish in the Louisiana pond she is today.

Her trainer, Lloyd Romero, is a retired state trooper and the father of retired jockey Randy Romero whose mount Personal Ensign was the previous holder of the modern record for consecutive wins by a filly (13). Some may remember the movie "Casey's Shadow" which was based on Romero and his family at the All-American Futurity. The 65 year old Romero, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, is also the president of the Louisiana Horsemen Benevolent and Protective Association and intends to keep her in Louisiana for the rest of her 3 year old campaign.

Needless to say all those wins have attracted the attention of the big money owners and they have been offered $2 million for her so far but her owners aren't biting. Romero said: "Let me ask you this: How much does it cost to bury you? About $5,000. And I got that." For now he is just enjoying the ride of a lifetime.

Her jockey, Sylvester Carmouche, is best remembered for a ride in 1990 that he would probably rather forget. On a foggy night at Delta Downs he hid in the fog and let the other horses go by and waited for them to come by again. He then rejoined the race with a fresh horse and won, but by too far and too quickly. The horse was disqualified and Carmouche wound up with a 10 year suspension for "failure to race the entire course". He got his license reinstated in 1998 after serving 8 years of the suspension. Prior to Hallowed Dreams, the biggest purse the 41 year old jockey had ever won was a $10,000 stakes at Delta Downs.

Hallowed Dreams actually comes from a fairly good Louisiana family with a stakes winning dam and two stakes level siblings. Her sire Malagra is a graded stakes winning sprinter and former track record holder for 6 furlongs at the Fair Grounds. With breeding like that it is no surprise that she is so good in her home state. Unless someone decides to ship in to Louisiana to challenge her, the win streak looks likely to continue.
