| MAN O'WAR away well, assumed complete control from RUFFIAN before 3/4s, won by 6 1/2 under hand ride in overpowering performance. | ||||||||||||
| SECRETARIAT away last, rated for a 1/2, charged gallantly for second, much the best of the rest. | ||||||||||||
| CITATION blocked early, under punishment earned show by nose. | ||||||||||||
| SWAPS saved on rail, moved second in backstretch, couldn't maintain in final 1/16th. | ||||||||||||
| SPECTACULAR BID away poorly, conserved mid-pack, moved up but did not menace. | ||||||||||||
| NATIVE DANCER waited too long, moved very late to get 6th. | ||||||||||||
| COUNT FLEET hung mid-pack, faded late. | ||||||||||||
| RUFFIAN led early in blazing fractions, faded, finished weakly. | ||||||||||||
| SEATTLE SLEW 4th early, thereafter never a factor. | ||||||||||||
| DR. FAGER rushed from outside to contend, could not keep pace in final three furlongs. | ||||||||||||
| WHIRLAWAY never could contend. | ||||||||||||
| AFFIRMED disappointed. | ||||||||||||
You may or may not agree with the final order of finish, but it was an interesting exercise and a lot of good discussions came out of it. Don (FastFurlong) has promised us "TOURNAMENT OF THOROUGHBREDS III", a handicap at 1 1/2 miles for colts/horses and 1 1/4 miles for fillies/mares, which will debut in the fall. So if you didn't get to participate in this round, be sure to show up in the fall for the next one!
