Belmont Post PositionsDateline: 06/07/00
Entries were drawn this morning for the 132nd Belmont Stakes and a field of 11 was entered. The defection of both Red Bullet and Fusaichi Pegasus from the race made it seem much more wide open so anyone who thought they had a chance joined the party. Several horses from the Derby are back after skipping the Preakness and that experience combined with the longer rest may work to their advantage. Morning line favorite Aptitude is one who tried this path. The rest of the field are mostly coming off the Peter Pan Stakes except Impeachment and Hugh Hefner who come in off the Preakness. Impeachment will be the only horse to compete in all three Triple Crown races this year.
Past performances are available for free online from the Daily Racing Form here in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Post time for the Belmont is approximately 5:30pm EDT and between ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC there will be TV coverage all afternoon (schedule). If you have Dish Netork and TVG, they will start at 10am and go to 7pm with Belmont coverage.
The Belmont StakesHere is the field in post position order. Distance is 1 1/2 miles and all entrants carry 126 lbs. The purse is $1,000,000 Guaranteed Minimum Gross. Click on the horse's name to see full info on him or check out the stats and info on all the entrants here.
second in the Kentucky Derby
Nobody here is a huge standout but Aptitude seems to have a lot going for him having run well in the Derby and being bred perfectly for the Belmont so he is a logical favorite. Wheelaway has been working well and seems like he might be ready for a big race this time. Unshaded will be looking to redeem his loss in the Peter Pan while Peter Pan winner Postponed will try to give his owner and trainer a second consecutive Belmont win. Impeachment has to be respected for making it to all three races and for finishing third in both the Derby and Preakness. Will the added distance let him rally up for a win or will the rigors of the two previous races have him too tired? It is a very interesting race from a handicapping standpoint with some nice longshot possiblities. After the past performances are available, I will post some further comments.
