1999 Belmont Stakes

Dateline: 06/02/99

* Charismatic update
* Famous Faces
A record crowd of 85,818 people came hoping to see Charismatic become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 but longshot Lemon Drop Kid stole the show. He put in a strong rally to win by a head over Vision and Verse while Charismatic faded to third as a result of injuries sustained during the race. Charismatic suffered both a condylar fracture and sesamoid fractures in his left front leg and was pulled up just after the finish. He is to be operated on and have screws put in the leg and so far the injuries do not look life threatening.
