Hal's Hope gave his 88 year old breeder, owner, and trainer Harold Rose a thrilling victory in the Florida Derby. He was always on or near the lead and was challenged twice by heavy favorite High Yield, once from the inside and again from the outside, but held his ground to win by a neck. Both of them were well clear of the rest of the field.

Bonus: Fair Grounds Oaks

Saturday was the $350,000 Fair Grounds Oaks which was supposd to be the redemption of Chilukki after losing in her debut this year, however it was not to be. She was in third for the early going but showed no interest in running and faded to finish 8th. Picking up the pieces was Overbrook Farm's Shawnee Country who rallied from 7th to win by 2 lengths at odds of 6.9 to 1.
