Trivia Answer

I have had quite a few people ask me for the answer to one of the questions on the Globe and Mail trivia contest.

"I became an outstanding athlete despite being hampered by a bad back, and was killed in a plane crash in the twilight of my career. A racehorse named after me developed into a champion. Who am I?"
