From the article: 2009 Preakness Contenders
The Preakness, with a maximum field of 14 horses, can be just as hard to handicap as the Kentucky Derby. While some of the Derby horses go on to run for the Black-eyed Susans at Pimlico, there are always some fresh horses trying to steal the second jewel of the Triple Crown Which horse do you think will win the Preakness this year and why? Tell us your choice!

Mine that What????

Not a chance...... Pioneer of the Nile...... all the way!

Mistakes

You have Flying Private and"Rachel" reversed on one of your screens. It also says "2008 entries".

Clear class of the field

Rachel Alexandra is head and shoulders above this bunch classwise. I expect her to toy with them, too. Friesen Fire's Derby run is a toss. That's the exacta. Big Drama hasn't seen anything like what he'll face. Those restricted stakes wins look good on paper, but they mean little when stepping up to grade one competition.

tough call even w/great handicapping!

There seems to be too much over-analyzing with a race like this following the big upset in the Derby. Like trying to improve your golf game with all the ideas from a book... you end up playing worse! Can "Mine that Bird" do it again in the 2nd leg? Is the 13th post a killer for the filly? Has Big Drama had enough prep? Is "Pioneer of the Nile" all he is supposed to be? and on and on... My instincts (long time handicapper) tells me that Friesan Fire is still in good form and should have a cleaner trip. Musket Man has the goods to be near the front at the end as well but I like "Big Drama" to cook the filly, Rachel Alexander, on the front end (along with post#13) even though she looks very formidable. I think "Big Drama" is fresher than the rest and can wire this bunch even without the distance preps.

Preakness Pick

Rachel Alexandra, by 10, in 1:53 4/5. She sits off Big Drama, who folds like an accordion at the top of the stretch...and she opens up on the field around the final turn. Mine That Bird makes his big run, but he is way too far behind, and nips Friesan Fire for the place.
