The King Edward VII Stakes (G2) was introduced as the Ascot Derby in 1834 in that it is restricted to 3-year-olds. It was renamed in 1926 and is now restricted to 3-year-old colts and geldings only. A field of seven faced the starter in this 1 1/2 mile event for a £200,000 (about $399,000 US) purse. 7-1 shot Boscobel led every step of the way, slowing the pace on the front end and then kicking away through the final 1/4 when asked by Joe Fanning to hold off 5-2 favorite Lucarno, who had stalked him in second the whole way, by a length. The running time was a slow 2:37.13 over the "good-to-soft" course. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to 8-1 Yellowstone in third.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston said, "I have had him since November and last year I had a lot of horses running under the Jumeirah Racing banner. This year I have the horses running in Sheikh Mohammed's colors, which lets him take the credit, which is how it should have been in the first place. He had a few problems early on and started on the all-weather but you can see it's worked as he's a tough horse now."

Winning jockey Joe Fanning added, "Mark said not to bustle him along early and if I got to the front to let him bowl and then kick. He's very tough, this horse. I felt them come to me but every time they got to my quarters he kept finding a bit. I think he could be a St. Leger horse, he'll definitely stay further so something like that would probably be the plan."

John Gosden, trainer of runner-up Lucarno said, He ran a great race to be second but the winner's a nice horse. We might have seen the St Leger winner. It was a slow time. 2:37 and change tells us something and they were probably playing into his hands up front. There are no reasons to change anything for him and we will stick to 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 miles."
