Bronze Canon wins the 2009 Hardwicke Stakes
The £125,000 (US $203,800) Hardwicke Stakes (G2) at 1 1/2 miles for older horses was first run in 1879, named after the 5th Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds from 1874-1879, and is the major local prep for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) which is run in July over the same course and distance.

Campanologist was sent off as the 2-1 favorite over 5-2 second choice Doctor Fremantle and Bronze Cannon and Dansant each 8-1. 11-1 Tajaaweed battled on the front end with 25-1 Barshiba through the first 3/8 mile until Barshiba quickly opened up an 8 length lead on the field. However, the fast pace took its toll as Campanologist gradually gained on the pacesetter, passing the tiring Barshiba at the 1/4 pole. Bronze Cannon, who sat midpack early, put in a strong rally late to nail the favorite at the line to get the win by 1/2 a length in 2:27.59 over good-to-firm turf, just 0.35 seconds off the course record. It was another 2 lengths back to late-running Dansant third.

Winning jockey Jimmy Fortune said, "They went very quick early, and I was happy to sit where I was. He has a big heart this horse. (Campanologist) wasn't stopping, my lad kept pulling that bit more out and wore him down in the end. It was a good effort to win with a penalty, they're not bad horses he's beaten. He gets 1 1/2 miles well and is a very game little horse. He's certainly going the right way."

Trainer John Gosden added, "He won the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket and picked up a 3 lb penalty for this. We were always going to come here but it is difficult with a penalty. Frankie (Dettori) told me at the start of the week he thought this was his best chance of a winner but our horse has shown lots of courage, given them 3lb and beat the lot of them. I suppose we will have to look at Group 1s now but we are happy where we are at the moment."
