Won the San Pedro and was 2nd in the San Felipe at Santa Anita, then shipped east to win the Arkansas Derby for his final prep. In the Kentucky Derby he suffered traffic trouble most of the way and steadily dropped back through the field, from about 3 lengths back in the early stages, to 36 3/4 lengths back at the finish, in 17th. When all the other Derby horses ducked Big Brown, they decided to go to the Preakness where he led for 6 furlongs before fading to 11th.
