Unraced as a juvenile, he broke his maiden in his second start at Santa Anita on February 11, and followed that up with a second place finish in the San Felipe (G2) on March 10. Drew off to win the Arkansas Derby (G1) by 9 1/2 lengths for his final prep. Set the pace in the Kentucky Derby but couldn't hold off I'll Have Another, finishing 2nd by 1 1/2 lengths. Once again he set the pace in the Preakness and was again unable to hold off I'll Have Another, finishing second by a head.
