Trainer Larry Jones defended his choice of rider, saying, "We're putting him on multimillion-dollar horses, and I think this kid represented our business as professionally as could be run. If I were to run in the Derby tomorrow, I'd put him right back on my horse."

Describing his experience that day, owner Rick Porter said, "The whole family was there and we were excited. Then we saw the ambulance go by and we started looking for our colors and we couldn't find them. And then it was a matter of time before we found out it was Eight Belles."
