The Preakness Stakes card is the richest in the state, and with 121,263 on hand, a new record was set for Maryland sporting events on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The huge crowd was treated to thirteen live races, seven of them stakes over $100,000 including of course the Preakness itself. A total of $87,202,550 was bet on the entire racing card, the fourth highest in history. Thanks to sunny weather in the low 70's most of the day, racing conditions were ideal with a fast main track and firm turf course. Fans were greeted by rainshowers just before the Preakness and more rain fell after.
