The $2 million Kentucky Derby (G1) is the world's most famous horse race, featuring the best 3-year-olds in North America contesting the 1 1/4 mile trip under the shadow of the Twin Spires of Churchill Downs before a crowd of 153,563. With morning line favorite I Want Revenge scratching due to injury, 19 went to post with Louisiana Derby winner Friesan Fire the 7-2 favorite over Florida Derby runner-up Dunkirk at 5-1. Santa Anita Derby winner Pioneerof the Nile was the 6-1 third choice. Conditions were less than ideal, with a sloppy track, dark overcast skies, and temperatures in the mid 50's.
Join in the Dance set a fast pace of 22.98, 47.23, and 1:12.09 while being stalked by Regal Ransom just to his outside and Pioneerof the Nile 2 lengths back. Join in the Dance continued to lead to the quarter pole, getting 1 mile in 1:37.49, but he tired allowing Pioneerof the Nile to inherit the lead at the 3/16 pole. Mine That Bird, the second longest price on the board, had raced 20 lengths off the pace early but passed horses along the rail on the far turnn. Jockey Calvin Borel found a narrow opening inside Join in the Dance and sent Mine That Bird through. Mine That Bird drew off through the final furlong to win by 6 3/4 lengths over Pioneerof the Nile in 2:02.66. It was just a nose back to Musket Man third, and a head to Papa Clem fourth. Friesan Fire came out wide for the drive but showed no late response, finishing a disappointing 18th beaten 42 1/2 lengths.
