Kicking off the stakes action on Derby Day is the $100,000 Eight Belles Stakes (G3), featuring a field of 7 three-year-old fillies sprinting 7 1/2 furlongs on the main track. 3-5 favorite Hot Dixie Chick battled for the lead with Decelerator down the backstretch through fractions of 23.00 and 45.37. The fast pace set the race up for the closers, as 8-1 Buckleupbuttercup, who was 5th arly, came out wide at the 3/8 pole to take the lead, opening up a 2 1/2 length advantage at the 1/8 pole through 3/4 in 1:10.13, then drawing off to win by 6 1/4 lengths over Visavis in 1:29.49. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Hot Dixie Chick third.
