Update: Pool One of the 2010 Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed. As expected the field was made the favorite at only 3-2. Juvenile champion Lookin at Lucky, who will make his first start of the year in the San Felipe on March 13, closed as the second choice at 8-1. Undefeated Buddy's Saint, who will make his 3-year-old debut in the Fountain of Youth Stakes on February 20 is the third choice at 10-1. . The total amount wagered during Pool One was $466,048, down 2.5% from last year, however the pool was only open Friday to Sunday unlike past years when it opened on Thursday. $385,995 was bet to win while just $80,053 went into the exacta pool.
The 2010 edition of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set to open its first three-day run on Friday February 12, and the mutuel field, the wagering interest that includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual betting interests in the pool, has been installed as a solid 5-2 favorite.
The mutuel field has been favored in the opening Kentucky Derby Future Pool in each year since Churchill Downs introduced the wager in 1999, both on the morning line and the final odds, and the Kentucky Derby winner was part of the field in Pool One in five of the last ten years. The lowest odds individual horse is Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Lookin At Lucky at 8-1. Next lowest are four horses tied at odds of 12-1: Buddy's Saint, Conveyance, Jackson Bend, and Rule.
Wagering on the three-day pool opens at noon (all times EST) on Friday February 12 and will continue until 6pm on Sunday, February 14. Racetracks and off-track betting centers across North America will offer the wager. Pool 2 is scheduled for March 5-7 and will also include the single Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool. The third and final pool is set for March 26-28.
