The 2009 edition of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set to open its first four-day run on Thursday February 12, and the mutuel field, the wagering interest that includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual betting interests in the pool, has been installed as a solid 5-2 favorite.
The mutuel field has been favored in the opening Kentucky Derby Future Pool in each year since Churchill Downs introduced the wager in 1999, both on the morning line and the final odds, and the Kentucky Derby winner was part of the field in Pool One in four of the last ten years. The lowest odds individual horses are Remsen Stakes winner Old Fashioned and Hutcheson Stakes winner Capt. Candyman Can, both at 10-1. Six horses, including last weekend's Risen Star winner Friesan Fire and Las Virgenes winner Stardom Bound, are next at odds of 12-1.
Wagering on the four-day pool opens at noon (all times EST) on Thursday February 12 and will continue until 6pm on Sunday, February 15. Racetracks and off-track betting centers across North America will offer the wager.
Below are the wagering interests with morning line and final odds for Pool One of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Free past performances are available from the Kentucky Derby website and Daily Racing Form. Will-pays for each horse are on page 2.
