March 7, 2006
Update: Wagering is now closed and the final odds posted below. Once again the field wound up the favorite at 3-1. Brother Derek closed as the pool's second choice at 10-1 after his impressive win in the Santa Catalina followed by Bluegrass Cat at 11-1. Barbican was scratched after he suffered a fractured ankle. The total pool was the second highest ever at $464,236. The Kentucky Oaks had only $54,054 wagered on it and the field was also favored there at 9-2 with Balance and Wild Fit the co-second choices at 7-1.
The 2006 edition of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set to open its second four-day run on Thursday, March 2nd and the mutuel field, the wagering interest that includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual betting interests in the pool, is a narrow favorite at 5-1 over multiple stakes winner Brother Derek.
Brother Derek, winner of the Hollywood Futurity and the San Rafael, is listed as the favored individual horse and a close 6-1 second choice in the morning line. The California-bred, who closed at odds of 16-1 in the year's opening Derby Futures pool, is scheduled to compete in Sunday's Santa Catalina at Santa Anita and is considered the top west-coast contender now that Stevie Wonderboy is out due to an injury.
Wild Fit, runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and Las Virgenes in her last two races, is listed as the 6-1 co-favorite with "all other 3-year-old fillies" in second of three pools in Churchill Downs' 2006 Kentucky Oaks Future Wager which will run simultaneously with the Derby Future Wager. Wild Fit, who had yet to make her 3-year-old debut when the first four-day Oaks Future pool was conducted, still closed as the 7-1 third choice in that pool and has since turned in a strong second place finish to Balance in the Las Virgenes.
Wagering on the four-day pool opens at noon (all times EST) on Thursday March 2nd and will continue until 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 5. Racetracks and off-track betting centers across North America will offer the wager, which will be offered in Canada for the first time as Toronto's Woodbine Racecourse has gained approval to offer the bet.
Below are the wagering interests and morning line odds for both races. Free past performances are available from Daily Racing Form, BRIS, and TrackMaster.
