A field of 12 was entered for the 138th Belmont Stakes and post positions were drawn on Wednesday. Kentucky Derby runner-up Bluegrass Cat is the lukewarm favorite at 3-1 with Peter Pan Stakes winner Sunriver close behind at 4-1.
Both the top choices are trained by Todd Pletcher. When asked about Bluegrass Cat going off at 30-1 in the Derby, he said, "It's kind of like, how good was your last race? That's fair enough. The only thing that we stood by was that we really thought the Blue Grass was a throwout. If you draw a line through the Blue Grass, he's done very little wrong." On Sunriver he said, "I never cried when he didn't get into the Derby. The horse was doing very well and I thought he had a chance to be competitive. Watching the race, he probably wasn't going to beat Barbaro, so maybe it was the best thing for him."
