2010 Triple Crown Late Nominations

With just 4 weeks to the Kentucky Derby the field was the favorite in the final pool of the Future Wager for the first time ever, showing just how wide-open this year's renewal will be. On Thursday April 1, the supplemental nominations were announced, with just 6 paying the $6000 fee to get in. With so many upsets lately, it looks like it will may need a record high amount of graded stakes earnings to make the Derby field and all 6 of the late nominees will have to win big in their final prep to draw in. Topping the list of new faces is Gotham Stakes (G3) runner-up Yawanna Twist who has $50,000 in graded earnings and is currently #46 on the earnings list and will need to finish better than third in Saturday's Illinois Derby at Hawthorne in order to have a chance at making the Kentucky Derby field.

If any additional horses not already nominated want to enter, they will have to be supplemented. Cost for this is $200,000 for the Kentucky Derby and $100,000 for the Preakness and Belmont. Even if a horse is supplemented, he is the lowest in priority for getting in the race with any early or late nominee getting preference over him. For the early and late nominees, graded stakes earnings determine their priority with the field limited to 20 starters for the Kentucky Derby with no also-eligibles allowed.

The early nomination period for the three Triple Crown races closed January 16 and 366 3-year-olds were made eligible for the three-race series at that time. The six late nominees bring the overall nomination total for 2010 to 372.
