January 1st marks the birthday for all Thoroughbreds and the new three-year-olds will start their campaigns for the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown. The Tropical Park Derby at Calder Race Course, run on January 2nd this year, is the first and marks the beginning of a schedule of preps restricted to 3-year-olds that will run every weekend until the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. It has been 32 years since Affirmed won the last Triple Crown, and while Big Brown looked like he might do it in 2008 it did not come to pass. Will someone finally take the big prize this year?
