Update: Late Triple Crown Nominees - 11 more horses nominated by March 28 for a $6000 fee were announced on April 1st headed by Florida Derby winner Quality Road.
A total of 401 3-year-olds were nominated for the 2009 Triple Crown by the January 24 deadline of the early period, down by 11% from last year's record of 449 and 2007's record of 450. Early nominations pay a $600 fee, and they are now all eligible for the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Although early nominations are now closed, owners can still nominate their 3-year-olds by March 28 for a $6000 fee.
Steve Asmussen has the most nominated horses with 25, Todd Pletcher has 20, and Nick Zito has 19. Zayat Stables leads all owners with 22 nominations, his third straight year leading this category and double the 11 they had last year. Unbridled's Song and A.P. Indy lead all stallions with 14 nominations each, followed by Medaglia d'Oro with 13. There are 27 foreign-trained horses nominated, including Midshipman and Vineyard Haven who were both purchased by Godolphin and are training in Dubai.
Edward P. Seigenfeld, executive director of Triple Crown Productions said, "Business is off, the economy is off; the racing industry seems to be focusing on a 20% decline every time we put out a number. Down 11% is not too bad. We expected it to be around 400 horses, as a general estimate of what we had observed and what owners and trainers had been telling us, which is that there is a lot of tightening up this year."
