2006 Triple Crown Nominations

By

Trainer Todd Pletcher

Trainer Todd Pletcher has the most horses nominated with 38

Updated February 05, 2006
The fourth highest number of 3-year-olds since the creation of Triple Crown Productions in 1985 were nominated early for the 2006 Triple Crown. 427 were nominated by the January 21 deadline of the early period, for a $600 fee, and they are now all eligible for the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Last year, only 357 made the early nominations list, since that was during the height of Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome's impact on the Thoroughbred breeding industry. Although early nominations are now closed, owners can still nominate their 3-year-olds by March 26 for a $6000 fee.

Globalization in racing is evident here, as 15 nominees are from Europe or the Middle East. Bob and Beverly Lewis own the most nominees with 10, with West Point Thoroughbreds owning 9. Michael Tabor is part or full owner of 9 nominees, while Dubai-based Godolphin Racing owns 5. 2004 and 2005 Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher has the most nominees with a whopping 38, leading this list for the fifth year in a row. Nick Zito and Richard Mandella are a distant second in this category with 15 nominees each, followed by 14 trained by Bob Baffert, and 13 each trained by D. Wayne Lukas and Steve Asmussen.

"This year's early figures show emphatically the continued viability of racing's Triple Crown," said executive vice-president Edward P. Seigenfeld of Triple Crown Productions. "The response from horsemen on both sides of the Atlantic once again proves that the dream wrapped up in this most difficult of all sporting accomplishments never fades." With the loss of the Visa sponsorship, there will not be a $5 million bonus if a horse sweeps the series.

Nominations during the early period, which closed on January 21, cost $600 but horses can still be nominated by March 25 during the late nomination period for a fee of $6000.

Below is the list of all 427 nominees in name order with sex, color, and sire. A list of the current top Kentucky Derby contenders with photos and profiles can be viewed here.
