For the first time this year, entry in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs will be determined by a new points system called Road to the Kentucky Derby instead of the old graded stakes earnings system. Points will be earned in a series of 36 selected prep races to determine priority for horses wishing to be Kentucky Derby starters in an effort to make the selection order more fair. A similar system is also in place for the Kentucky Oaks, but fillies who want in the Derby will have to compete in with the colts for Derby points. While those Kentucky Derby points earned by fillies will also count toward the Kentucky Oaks, Kentucky Oaks points will not count towards the Kentucky Derby. Below is the leaderboard of horses in order of points earned for both the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks as of April 20, 2013. Also included for comparison are their earning in non-restricted stakes races which also serves as a tie-breaker when two horses have the same number of points. Horses who are not currently nominated to the Triple Crown or Kentucky Oaks have been removed from the leaderboard as have those who are sidelined due to injury or other reasons. There is only one race left for Oaks points and two races left for Derby points, but they are only worth 20 points each to the winners.
