January 1st marks the birthday for all Thoroughbreds and the new three-year-olds will start their campaigns for the Kentucky Derby and the Triple Crown. The first Derby of the year, the Gulfstream Park Derby, is on New Year's Day at Gulfstream and there will be a prep race somewhere every weekend from now on until the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. It has been 34 years since Affirmed won the last Triple Crown, and while Big Brown looked like he might do it in 2008 it did not come to pass. Will someone finally take the big prize this year?

Note that some tracks (notably Laurel and Keeneland) have not released their stakes schedule yet so we do not have the correct dates for these tracks yet and have estimated them based on last year.
