Update: Pool One of the 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed. As expected the field wound up the favorite at only 3-2. Union Rags, second in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile, closed as the second choice at 7-1, but he is not expected to make his first start this year until February 26 in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. Holy Bull Stakes winner Algorithms was the third choice at 12-1. The total amount wagered during Pool One was $631,304 which is a new single pool record, beating out the $620,362 wagered in Pool 1 of 2005. Of that, $494,263 was bet to win while $137,041 went into the exacta pool.
The 2012 edition of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager is set to open its first three-day run on Friday, February 10, and will close on Sunday, February 12. The mutuel field, the wagering interest that includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual betting interests in the pool, has once again been installed as the 9-5 favorite.
The mutuel field has been favored in the opening Kentucky Derby Future Pool in each year since Churchill Downs introduced the wager in 1999, both on the morning line and the final odds, and the Kentucky Derby winner was part of the field in Pool One in five of the last ten years. The lowest odds individual horse is undefeated winner of the Holy Bull Stakes, Algorithms, at 8-1 with Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up Union Rags at 10-1 and Juvenile winner Hansen at 12-1.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia said, "The mutuel field has been a solid favorite in every opening pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and, given the loss by 2-year-old champion Hansen in his first start as a 3-year-old, there is every reason to think the 'all others' bet will be a strong-to-heavy favorite in what appears to be a wide-open crop of Kentucky Derby candidates. The 'now' horse is Algorithms, who is unbeaten, comes from the Pletcher barn, has a strong pedigree and easily handled the reigning 2-year-old champ in the Holy Bull. The speed figures assigned to that win were impressive, so you can expect a lot of bettors to move in his direction. But every pool has interesting Derby prospects at attractive odds, and we should remember that last year's Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, did not even appear as an individual wagering interest until Pool 3. So much can happen on the road to the Kentucky Derby." Algorithms is one of four KDFW Pool 1 horses trained by Pletcher, who saddled Super Saver to win the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
Wagering on the three-day pool opens at noon (all times EST) on Friday February 10 and will continue until 6pm on Sunday, February 12. Racetracks and off-track betting centers across North America will offer the wager. Pool 2 is scheduled for March 2-4 and will also include the single Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool. The third and final pool is set for March 30-April 1. Full rules and info for the wager is available here.
